English typing speed test

Take a 1, 2, 5 or 10 minute test. Net WPM, accuracy and wrong words show up instantly.

2:00
The market opens early in the morning, long before the sun climbs over the rooftops. Vendors arrange their fruits and vegetables in neat rows, and the smell of fresh coriander drifts through the lanes. A boy carries a heavy basket on his head while his mother counts the change. Customers walk slowly from stall to stall, comparing prices and asking about quality. By noon the crowd thins, and the shopkeepers sit in the shade, sharing tea and stories. When evening arrives, the lights come on one by one, and the same lanes become busy again with people returning home from work. A long train journey teaches patience in a way that few other things can. The window seat becomes a small theatre where fields, rivers and tiny stations pass by without a pause. Passengers share snacks, trade newspapers and sometimes tell stories about the cities they come from. Children press their faces to the glass and count the poles as they flash past. At night the carriage grows quiet, and the steady rhythm of the wheels feels like a slow lullaby. In the morning, everyone wakes with the same hope, that the next station will bring a hot cup of tea.

Pasting is disabled. Each word is matched against the word in the same position in the passage, so missing one word can mark the following words wrong too.

How it works

  1. Pick a duration, like 2 min.
  2. Start typing in the box. The timer starts on the first character.
  3. The result appears the moment time runs out, or the passage is finished.

Frequently asked questions

How does the typing test calculate WPM?

5 characters count as one word. Gross WPM = typed characters (including spaces) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM minus wrong words per minute. Accuracy = correct words ÷ typed words.

Is this the same as the SSC or CPCT typing test?

This is for practice. The real exam's timing, backspace rules, passage and WPM formula can differ, so always check the exam's official notice.

How do I type faster?

Get accuracy right first — speed follows on its own. Sit straight, look at the screen rather than the keyboard, and practise 10–15 minutes a day. Review the wrong-words list and retype those specific words.

Does my typed text go anywhere?

No. The text stays only in your browser. To show past results, only the score and date are kept in your browser's local storage — they never reach us.

Where do the passages come from?

All written by Falorax for this site, so there's no copyright question. None of them contain dates, figures or news.
